Alteryx Designer: "Failed to start a new Hyper instance" with Publish to Tableau Server tool

Summary
In some cases a customer using the Publish to Tableau Server macro encounters the error message "Failed to start a new Hyper instance". The only currently working solution for this is to perform a nuclear uninstall and then reinstall of Alteryx Designer.
Environment

The Publish to Tableau Server macro fails with "Failed to start a new Hyper instance".

  • Alteryx Designer
    • Version 2018.2+
  • Publish to Tableau Server tool
    • Version 1.09.2+
  • Tableau Server
    • Version 10.5+

 When trying to generate a new Hyper file using the Publish to Tableau Server tool the following error message occurs:

 

Failed to start a new Hyper instance. 
 


The full error will look similar to:
 

TableauServer.PublishTDE.yxmc (592): Record #1: TableauServer.OutputDataConditionally.yxmc (96): Record #1: Tool #8: Failed to start a new Hyper instance. Context: 0x86a93465
Caused by:
The Hyper server process exited during startup with exit code: 1. Command-line: ""C:\Program Files\Alteryx\bin\Tableau\bin\hyper\hyperdstarter.exe " -x "database_directory=C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp" -x "fallback_on_unknown_locale=en_US " -x "log_config=file,json,all,hyperd,0" -x "restrict_database direc...


Further symptoms might include:

  • You are still able to generate TDE files
  • You can overwrite existing HYPER files
Cause

The cause of this issue is typically an environmental issue that leads to a corruption of components of the Publish to Tableau Server macro.

Resolution

Follow the steps for a complete uninstall in the following KB article.
Then, reinstall Alteryx Designer and the Publish to Tableau Server tool.
