Description

After upgrading Server from 2020.1 to 2022.3.1.532 Patch 5, the Alteryx Service fails to start and gives the last start up error: "Gallery Service failed to start in a timely fashion, exiting.". The Gallery migration log (alteryx-migration.csv) shows the following:

2023-09-16 02:13:40.687080,FATAL,1,AlteryxServerHost,migrationLogger,DoMigrateDatabase,Migration failed with error: Incorrect decryption parameters

Looking at the MongoDB collections, it appears that the MongoDB schema migration did not complete and had gotten stuck at AlteryxGallery.dataConnectionsMigrationInProcess_34.

Issue
Alteryx Service does not start on Server after upgrade.
Environment
  • Alteryx Server
    • Version 2022.3.1.532 Patch 5
Prerequisites
Server has data connections with passwords that exist from before the Server upgrade
Cause
During the Server upgrade process, the data connection passwords stored in AlteryxGallery.dataconnections could not be decrypted. As a result, the MongoDB schema migration did not complete and got stuck at AlteryxGallery.dataConnectionsMigrationInProcess_34.
Resolution
Note: Backup your MongoDB before making any direct changes. You must be in a position to restore from a backup before following the steps below.
  1. Using a MongoDB UI such as Robo3T , connect to the AlteryxGallery database > dataConnections collection
  2. For each record, change the value of PasswordSecured to an empty string ""
  3. Restart the Alteryx Service on the Controller
  4. Upon successfully starting Server after the upgrade has completed, add the password back to the Server UI data connection:
    1. From the Server UI Admin page, go to Data Connections, select the data connection where the password was removed earlier in 2.
    2. Select Edit
    3. Under Connection String, overwrite the PWD value "__EncPwd1__" with the correct password, then click Save
This image shows the Password parameter to edit in the Connection String of the Server Data Connection, in the Edit Data Connection window in Server UI.
