Summary
When installing the Alteryx License Server, it may fail with an error with setting up the service. This issue can be resolved by reinstalling the Java Runtime Environment on the machine.

Error: "There was an error setting up the service" when installing Alteryx License Server

 

Environment Details

 

When installing the Alteryx License Server (ALS), it may fail with the error: "There was an error setting up the service. Please try again."



Attempting to install the Alteryx License Server service using the "flexnetls.bat -install" command in Command Line also fails with the below error:

  
  • Alteryx License Server (ALS)
    • All versions
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK)
    • All versions
Cause

Cause

 

The current JRE or JRK installation may be invalid or out of date.

Resolution

Resolution

 
  1. On the ALS machine, go to Control Panel > Programs and Features
  2. Uninstall Alteryx License Server
  3. Uninstall Java
  4. Download and install the latest version of the Java environment from Oracle: https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/#jre8-windows
  5. Install Alteryx License Server
