How To

Manually change your Salesforce API version when using ODBC

As Salesforce introduces new features and record types, you may want to change which API version you're using when connecting to Salesforce. This article goes over how to create a new DSN-less connection to Salesforce that will allow you specify any version of the Salesforce API currently available.

Environment
  • Alteryx Designer
    • All
  • Simba Salesforce ODBC driver
Prerequisites
  • Applicable Username, Password, and Security Token for the Salesforce connection
Procedure
  1. Install the Simba Salesforce ODBC driver, if you haven't already
  2. To set up a System DSN, open Designer as an administrator. If you only want to set up a User DSN, you can open Designer normally.
  3. Head into Options > Advanced Options > Manage Data Connections at the top of the window.
  4. Hover over Add Connection, and then click Other.
  5. Provide a name for the DSN, and specify whether it is a System or User DSN.
  6. Use the following as a template for the connection string field, replacing the information within the square brackets with your authentication credentials:
    1. odbc:Driver=Simba Salesforce ODBC Driver;UID=[Email];PWD=[Password];SecurityToken=[Token];ApiVersion=49.0
  7. Switch the ApiVersion number with the specific version number of the API you want to use and click Save. It will automatically encrypt your password and security token.

When you're done, you should see something like this:

Common Issues

Nothing happens when I click save

Sometimes this can happen when pasting things directly into the connection string field..
Follow these steps to get it to save:

  1. Highlight your connection string and cut/copy it (CTRL + X or CTRL + C).
  2. Click the down arrow button just to the right of the connection string field.
  3. Click any one of these options and hit enter on the following pop up window.
  4. Paste over the new auto-generated connection string with the one you copied/cut in step 1.
  5. Click Save.

Connection Error :
ERROR [IM002] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

The Simba Salesforce ODBC driver hasn't been installed yet. You can locate the installer for this driver by heading to downloads.alteryx.com, logging in, and then finding the driver under the Drivers sub-menu.
