Images in JPEG 2000 format cannot be extracted from PDF file in Image Input tool and PDF to Text tool

Description
Image Input tool and PDF to Text tool return an empty image for images that are encoded in JPEG 2000 in the PDF file. The following screenshot (as seen in File Explorer) shows an empty image output from the Image Output tool after reading the PDF file from the Image Input tool:

For the PDF to Text tool, you will also get the following warning message in Designer when reading the image content. This warning is not available in the Image Input tool.

Environment
  • Alteryx Designer
    • Version < 2024.2.1.14
  • Alteryx Intelligence Suite
    • Image Input tool
    • PDF to Text tool (available from version 2023.1.1)
Cause

The library used by the tools does not support the use of JPEG2000 images (jp2, jpx). Defect GCSE-1073/TISE-199/TAIS-4 has been logged to address this.

Resolution

Solution A: Upgrade Alteryx Designer and Alteryx Intelligence Suite

The defect has been addressed in version 2024.2.1.14. Please upgrade to this version or above.

 

Solution B: For Designer version < 2024.2.1.14

Please avoid using JPG2000 images in the PDF files until Alteryx Designer and Alteryx Intelligence Suite are upgraded to at least version 2024.2.1.14.
