Summary
This article explains how to identify the issue around the slowness of startup for the AlteryxAuthorizationService as it prevents the Alteryx Service to fully start.
Issue

This article addresses situations where the Alteryx Service does not come up following a restart, and the following are observable:

In the Service logs, this message appears after each attempt at restarting it:

AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"Starting Authentication service"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"ServicePoolController_Add: Adding service <Authentication> will start <1>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"AlteryxService_ServicePool_Starting: Service name <Authentication> URL <http://*:80/AlteryxService/Authentication>."
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"ServicePool::Start: Growing thread pool count to <1>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"ServiceThreadPool_GrowThreads: Growing thread pool count from <0> to <1>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"AuthenticationManager_InitDaemon: Initializing Authentication Daemon"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"AuthenticationDaemon_BuildCommandLine <C:\Program Files\Alteryx\bin\AlteryxAuthorizationService.exe ..........."
AlteryxService,RenderQueue,,,,,,,,"ServicePluginMapTile::AdjustThreads: Growing thread pool count to <0>"
AlteryxService,RenderQueue,,,,,,,,"ServiceThreadPool_GrowThreads: Growing thread pool count from <2> to <32>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"AuthenticationDaemon_Ping_Failed: Response code <404>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"ServicePluginAuthentication_WaitForStartupImpl: Waiting for startup, authentication manager state <0>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"AuthenticationDaemon_Ping_Failed: Response code <404>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"ServicePluginAuthentication_WaitForStartupImpl: Waiting for startup, authentication manager state <0>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"AuthenticationDaemon_Ping_Failed: Response code <404>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"ServicePluginAuthentication_WaitForStartupImpl: Waiting for startup, authentication manager state <0>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"AuthenticationDaemon_Ping_Failed: Response code <404>"
AlteryxService,,,,,,,,,"ServicePluginAuthentication_WaitForStartupImpl: Waiting for startup, authentication manager state <0>"

In the aas logs (under ProgramData\Alteryx\Logs), this message also seems to repeat:

[Information] Application "AlteryxAuthorizationService" is starting. Version "xxxx.x.x.xxxxx"
[Information] Configuring IdSvr.
[Warning] AuthorizationCodeStore not configured - falling back to InMemory
[Warning] TokenHandleStore not configured - falling back to InMemory
[Warning] ConsentStore not configured - falling back to InMemory
[Warning] RefreshTokenStore not configured - falling back to InMemory

but never prompts the below:

[Information] Alteryx Authorization Service started.
[Information] Alteryx Authorization Service is available

Also, the test to verify the IDP configuration in the Alteryx System Settings will return the below error:

"Failed to start Authentication service. Check your settings and try again".

Environment
  • Alteryx Server
    • SAML Authentication enabled

Cause

When SAML Authentication is enabled, an additional service is launched alongside Alteryx Service. The AlteryxAuthorizationService is the Authentication service for SAML and handles the communication with the IDP.

The core issue here is that for some reason the AlteryxAuthorizationService is taking a very long time to fully come up and be functional and after a certain time, and because the Alteryx Service is delayed in its startup, it will end up timing out.

Resolution

Initial test before applying the solution

  1. Stop the Alteryx Service
  2. Open a File Explorer
  3. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Alteryx
  4. Open RuntimeSettings.xml in a text editor
  5. Add the following value under the <Controller> tag:
    • <AuthenticationPingEnabled>False</AuthenticationPingEnabled>
  6. Restart the Alteryx Service
  7. Once the service has successfully started, confirm that the Gallery is available

If it does, you can then apply the following:

  1. Stop the Alteryx Service
  2. Open a File Explorer
  3. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Alteryx
  4. Open RuntimeSettings.xml in a text editor
  5. Remove the following that was added previously under the <Controller> tag:
    • <AuthenticationPingEnabled>False</AuthenticationPingEnabled>
  6. Add the following value under the <Controller> tag:
    • <ServiceRestartTimeToLive>300000</ServiceRestartTimeToLive>
    • <ServiceStartupTimeToLive>300000</ServiceStartupTimeToLive>
  7. Restart the Alteryx Service
  8. Once the service has successfully started, confirm that the Gallery is available
