Created/Edited - 1/22/2026 by Galilea Sanchez | Alteryx

This FAQ is built around the questions most commonly asked by Alteryx One admins, helping you navigate user access, licensing behavior, application enablement, and deployment scenarios with clear answers. The questions are organized under the following sections:

  • Getting Started
  • License Management & Version Compatibility
  • Scheduling & Automation
  • Server Considerations
  • User Lifecycle

Getting Started

What Is Alteryx One?

Alteryx One is the unified licensing and deployment platform that brings analytics, automation, and AI capabilities together in one place. It simplifies license management across desktop, cloud, and hybrid environments. It replaces individual license keys with centralized role-based user access.

How do we upgrade from the legacy Alteryx environment to Alteryx One?

Upgrading to Alteryx One involves assigning users roles to provision licenses.

  • Visit the onboarding guide here: Alteryx One Onboarding Guide
  • Be sure to review the Alteryx One Licensing for Existing Customers on 2024.2 & Earlier section at the bottom of the guide.

Do we need to manage infrastructure in Alteryx One? What if we're not cloud based?

You don’t need your own cloud infrastructure.

Alteryx hosts the platform:

  • You can run workflows in Alteryx One or remain fully on-prem.
  • Processing and storage in the Alteryx-hosted environment are included.
  • Automation is metered by automation runs, not infrastructure usage.

License Management and Version Compatibility

What’s different about licensing in Alteryx One?

Alteryx One introduces a login-based, role-assigned model:

  • Users are assigned Full or Basic Creator roles in the Admin Console.
  • No more copying/pasting license keys.
  • Designer versions 2025.1+ supports login-based activation.
  • Admins manage licenses through Alteryx One, not the Alteryx Licensing & Downloads portal.

Can we still use license keys?

Yes, but only for versions 2024.2 and below. Keys are still accessible in Alteryx One, but login activation is default for 2025.1+.

Can we use Alteryx One with 2024.2?

Yes, but with these limitations:

Feature2024.22025.1+ (Recommended)
License ActivationKey-basedLogin-based
Role Enforcement❌ Not enforced✅ Tools gated by user type
Automation Usage TrackingManual or API-basedBuilt-in telemetry reporting
AI/GenAI Tools❌ Not available✅ Enabled

We recommend upgrading to 2025.1 for the full Alteryx One experience.

Scheduling & Automation

Is scheduling still supported?

Yes, automation runs are tracked and visible in the Admin Console.

  • Enterprise Edition includes automation (Cloud & Server).
  • Runs are metered, not based on infrastructure.

How do we monitor automation usage?

The Admin Console shows current vs. entitled automation runs. Server 2025.1+ automatically reports usage to Alteryx One.

Server Considerations

What is a “workspace” in Alteryx One, and do we need one if we're Server-only?

Yes, all customers are provisioned at least one workspace automatically, even if not using cloud capabilities.

What this means for admins:

  • User access and licensing are managed through Alteryx One.
  • Admins must assign users to roles within the workspace for licenses to be provisioned.
  • Admins can create a single workspace (for example, “Server-Only Workspace”) to:
    • Maintain access to Server.
    • Restrict access to other Alteryx cloud products, if desired.

This approach allows customers to remain fully on-prem while adopting the new licensing model.

Is there feature parity with Alteryx Server?

No, Alteryx One is not designed to replicate Server 1:1 but to modernize and scale analytics delivery. You can stay on-prem and adopt cloud capabilities at your own pace.

User Lifecycle

Are licenses automatically reclaimed when employees leave?

Yes, when using SSO with SCIM provisioning. When a user is deactivated in your identity provider:

  • Their Alteryx access is removed automatically.
  • Their license becomes immediately available for reassignment.
  • No manual admin action required.

Can a user be in multiple workspaces?

Yes, a user consumes only one license seat even if assigned to multiple workspaces.

Can admins see how often Designer is used?

The Alteryx One portal shows the last time a license was used, but it does not provide detailed usage frequency metrics.
